Event Descriptions and Rules
Concourse D’ Elegance
Riders will present themselves and their horses in soft costuming to be judged in 3 parts, rider’s costume, horse costuming/barding and general presentation/horse grooming. Costuming can represent any ancient, medieval, or renaissance culture world wide.
MOUNTED GAMES
Combined Games
- We will be running all 3 games together as a timed Gauntlet. However, the time taken to complete the course will not be used to determine a participant’s score. We will only use the time factor if there is a tie in an individual mounted game. In that case the fastest overall course time will determine the order in placing.
Example: Bob scores 12 in rings with an overall course time of 1:10
Ted scores 12 in rings with an overall course time of 1:15
Bob would win the tie based on his time completing the entire course.
- Horses must be in a canter for a score to be recorded. Any horse unable to maintain gait
with out the influence of another horse or rider will result in no score for that particular run
or event.
- Each competitor will have 2 attempts on the course to make up their total score and time
Quintain
Competitors will use a lance for this mounted skill, quarter turns will not be counted,
and half turns will only be counted after the first full revolution.
Ring Spearing
Three different sizes of rings will be hung on 4 wooden arms along a 90m track. The rings
will have the following point values: Large 1 pt, Medium 3 pts, and Small 5 pts.
A lance will be used to catch the rings, should a competitor drop the lance or the rings on
the lance no points will be awarded.
Spear Throwing
Competitors will be asked to place and then throw a spear into 2 targets, a bulls-eye
represents 10pts, from there the points descend, 7, 5, 3, with one point awarded for Caroline, Paladin & the rings
hitting the outside of the target.
X-Country Gauntlet Pace
This gauntlet will take place on marked trails through the woods and fields behind Sandheide Farm. It will be
timed to determine the rider who’s time is closest to that of the “course pace” as set by the pace rider.
This is not a race.
Young Riders may have a parent or adult follow them on the Gauntlet course, however the adult must
first ride the course themselves if they are competing in this event.
Several skills or challenges will be on the course, they may include:
Tusker Du: Spear placement on a boar target, bulls-eye is worth 7pts, outer ring 5 pts.
Shield Pegging: similar to tent pegging, each shield hit being worth 1 pt. Only shields knocked over by
the tip of the spear will count towards the point’s total.
Mansour Target: a participant must place his sword in the heart of the target, worth 5pts
Damsel Drop: carry our damsel to a certain drop point, 6 pts for carrying her the full way.
Tree Targets: similar to rings, wooden targets are used instead. Scoring is 7 points for hitting a small target,
5 pts for medium, 3 pts for large.
Apple Chop: 3pts for each apple cut apart
Several small jumps may also be present, there are no points awarded for the jumps and participants may
go around them.
Overall Scoring: Every rider will begin with a score of 300; additional points will be added for the various
skills on course by field squires. For every second over or under the pace time 1 point will be deducted from Pauline, Noni & the Mansour
this score, with the rider with the highest final score being the winner. target

GROUND ARCHERY
General Rules
All participants will have 1 warm up shot at the target before they are scored.
Bows cannot be compound, or crossbow types, nor have mechanical triggers or sights. They have to be of traditional style such as Asian, Middle Eastern, or Native American with simple handles and without arrow shelves, shooting windows, or pistol grips.
Clout Shoot:
A wood pole is sunk 75m away from the shoot line, with the intent of landing an arrow in the ground as close to the pole as possible.
Participants will be shooting in groups and be given 6 attempts at the target.
Scoring is as follows: hitting the pole= 15 points, within 3 feet of the pole = 10 pts, 6 ft = 8 pts, 9 ft = 6pts, 12 ft = 4 pts, 15 ft = 2 pts.
Moving Targets:
Cardboard disks 1ft in diameter will be rolled across the ground 4 m in front of the participant for them Gerald, speed & accuracy
to shoot at. A miss-throw can be called by the thrower/judge in which case the participant will have the
opportunity to shot a replacement throw.
Participants will be given 5 targets to shoot at for their total score.
Scoring is as follows: Red center = 7 points; black outer ring = 5 points.
Speed and Accuracy:
Participants will stand 12 m away from a target. They will be given 12 seconds to accurately shoot as
many arrows as possible into the target within that time allowance.
Participants will be given two attempts to make up their final score.
For every arrow they shoot within the time allowance that hits the target area 1 point will be added to
their score in addition to the target points.
Target points are as follows: gold = 7; red = 6: blue = 5; black = 4: white = 3.
MOUNTED ARCHERY

6) The Judge’s decision will be final on all scoring and judging matters as they unfold on the course.
Korean Style Courses
The following mounted archery courses where developed by The International Horseback Archery
Federation and have been adopted by MA3 for competition use.
All competitors will have 3 runs on a course to make up their total score for that course.
Except for Mogu, all targets are round, 32 inch Styrofoam forms covered with a skirted target face
of five colors which are widely available. Scoring of the targets is according to the difficulty of the shot.
For all courses, except Mogu, arrows cannot be held in the hand but must be drawn from
a hip quiver or a belt.
Double Shot Course
Targets are placed 41m and 49m from the start of the course, the first target is a forward shot; the
second is a parting shot.
The course will be timed to settles any ties.
Scoring is as follows:
Forward shot: gold = 6; red = 5; blue = 4; black = 3; white, = 2.
Parting shot: gold = 7; red = 6: blue = 5; black = 4: white = 3.
Serial Shot
Five targets are place along the total length of the course in 30 meter increments, all presented as side Jordan & James
shots.
Scoring is as follows: bulls’ eye = 5 points, then 4, 3, 2 and 1 point respectively.
Additional points are added if:
- The first 3 targets are hit an additional 3 points is added to the score for that run.
- All 5 targets are hit an additional 5 points is added to the score for that run.
- If a competitor does not hit 3 targets on the course he/she is eliminated from the Serial Shot competition.
Mogu
A mounted rider pulls a Mogu ball behind him on a long rope over the course. A mounted archer chases the
ball while firing bunt arrows at it.
Arrows may be held in the bow hand as the blunts will be coated with paint to mark the hits.
Chasing archers may only hit the ball when both drag rider and chasing archer are in a canter, and not at the
beginning of the course when the drag rider is picking up the slack rope or at the end when it has been
dropped. A flag will be dropped or a drum beaten to indicate when the chase rider can set off after the ball
and start shooting.
Scoring is as follows: 5 points per hit to the Mogu ball Mogu!

North American Style Courses
The following mounted archery courses were amended or developed by MA3 for competition use.
Arrows can be held in the hand or drawn from the belt or hip quiver.
North American types of competition are preformed on a 90 meter straight track divided into 30 meter sections
denoted by drove posts on the left of the track.
All competitors will have 3 runs on a course to make up their total score for that course.
Standard Hungarian-Type Course.
Each competitor will canter down a 90 meter course divided by four drove posts which divide the course into
three equal sections. A three-faced target is placed at the center of the course (45 meters) but seven meters off
to the left side of the course. The competitors will shoot as many arrows as possible at the appropriate target
face as designated by his or her position between the posts. The course must be completed in 16 seconds or
less otherwise no score will be recorded or any targets hit during that pass.
The targets and scoring are as follows.
Forward or approach shot: gold = 6; red = 5; blue = 4; black = 3; white, = 2.
Side shot: gold = 5; red = 4; blue = 3; black = 2; white = 1.
Parting or backward shot: gold = 7; red = 6: blue = 5; black = 4: white = 3.
The targets are standard school and recreational 32 inch Styrofoam forms covered with a skirted target face of
five colors and are widely available. Scoring of the three targets is according to the difficulty of the shot. Marc & Chrispin
In addition, time remaining under the 16 second limit on the stop watch when a run is completed will be added
to the points scored (1 second = 1 point).
If no targets are hit during the pass, no “time points” will be awarded.
Moving Targets
Each competitor will canter the 90 meter course and attempt to shoot at three moving disks.
The throwers (three of them) will stand 4 meters from the center of the course, and 5 meters
down-course from each of the three respective drove posts. For the standardized competition with
formally recorded scores, the disks are rolled on the ground. The course again must be completed
in 16 seconds or no score will be recorded regardless of the number of hits.
The self-made 6-ply corrugated cardboard disk target will be 1 foot in diameter and painted and
scored as follows:
Red center = 7 points; black outer ring = 5 points.
Bonus points for speed of the horse are exactly the same as in the “Hungarian course” described in
the discipline immediately above this one. A faulty throw can be called by the judge followed by a
corrected throw; this will require an additional pass where the competitor shoots at all three throws
again, which cancels the total pass which had a faulty throw.
Ann shooting left handed at the disks
Alternating Targets.
Each competitor will canter down the 90 meter course with 5 targets presented-3 on the left,
and 2 on the right side of the archer. The targets are 1 foot square.
Left hand targets are positioned 4 meters from the center of the course and with the center of the target
being 2 feet (61cm) above ground level.
Right hand targets are 2 meters from the center of the course and with the center of the target being
2 feet (61 cm) above ground level.
All targets are placed 45 degrees to the course. The sequence of shooting this as follows, Left, Right,
Left, Right, Left.
All arrow points in this discipline must be rubber blunts for safety sake.
Gambler’s Choice – This course is not recognized by MA3
Each competitor will ride down the 90 meter course with 6 to 8 targets presented on the left side of the
archer. The targets will be a mix of forward, side and parting shots, in different sequences presented at
different distances from the course. The competitors will choose which they wish to shoot at.
Scoring of the targets is as follows:
Forward shot: Centre bull’s-eye = 4 pts, outer rings are 3 and 2 pts
Side shot: Centre bull’s-eye = 3pts, outer rings are 2 and 1 pts
Parting shot: centre bull’s-eye = 5 pts, outer rings are 4 and 3 pts.
Additional targets such as 3-D will also be present with different scoring. The alternating target course
